Do Something!

I ask—no, implore—every person reading this to NOT do everything possible to improve the environment, clean our planet, or improve their carbon footprint. I don’t want anyone to even try to do everything. I want you to do something.

One of my favorite quotes, given to me by my mother, is “nothing succeeds like success.” Nothing is more empowering, more confidence-building, more inspiring than succeeding at doing something you set out to do. When you set yourself up with a laundry list of ”should”s and don’t manage to do them all, it can feel like failure. If the task appears too daunting, it’s often difficult to even start. But if you set out to do one thing—just one—you will likely succeed. Realizing how easy and fulfilling the first success feels, most people will set out to do one more. The trend is established.

When you leave this year’s Eco-Fair, don’t set out to immediately replace all your light bulbs with compact fluorescent (CFL) bulbs, bike to work or to school, buy only locally and organically produced food and other products, recycle all recyclable materials, compost all table scraps, turn off all lights when leaving the room, turn off the water when brushing your teeth or scrubbing a dish, hang your clothes to dry instead of using the dryer, carpool with friends who live and work in the same area, install low-flow shower and faucet heads, take shorter showers, etc...—whew! Breathe. Instead, pick one thing you’re not already doing, and do that.

Many of these simple additions or slight alterations to your normal routine will save you money, improve your health, or have another direct, positive impact on your life. So... pick one easy thing you feel good about doing, and do it. Don’t feel the pressure to do everything possible. Doing everything possible starts with everyone doing something.
