Global Change, Local Action!

Discover Transportation Freedom

There are numerous reasons to bicycle, walk, ride transit, or use other ‘alternative’ modes of transportation. Along with important environmental and health reasons are practical economic reasons: transportation accounts for 19% of the average American’s household expenditures today, dramatically more than in 1920 when it accounted for only 3% of such expenditures! Plus, bicycling, walking, riding transit, and car-pooling are fun, relaxing, and extremely interesting ways to travel!

To learn about the Discover Transportation Freedom program, including how you might win $1700, visit the Alternative Community Choice in Transportation (ACCT) website at www.transportationchoice.org.

Using Creative Transportation to Get to the Eco-Fair

Use alternative transportation to get to Eco-Fair! Global climate change is one of the prime issues of concern facing our world today. The general consensus by climate experts is that we need to aim for a global temperature increase of no more than 2 to 3 degrees Celsius (4 to 5 degrees Fahrenheit) by 2050 to avoid truly dramatic environmental collapse. To achieve this goal, we in the United States need to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions to 60-80% below our 1990 level by 2050!

Depending on the data used and the way different components are categorized, the transportation sector is the first or second largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions in the country, with emissions ranging from approximately 27% to approximately 33% of the nation's total. It is also the fastest growing contributor to greenhouse gas emissions in the country.

Bicycling and walking do not directly emit any greenhouse gases. Other alternative modes of transportation, including transit and carpooling, also produce much fewer greenhouse gas emissions than driving alone.

Curb your automobile use, start using creative transportation more, be the change! There will be group bike rides, vanpools from Downtown, and carpools to the Earth Day Eco-Fair. Start here! Arts 4 Bike Paths

When: April 19, 10:30 am-2:30 pm
Where: Earth Day Eco-Fair @ CHS's track/football field

This annual art show auction hosted by Linda Capacchione never fails to generate a diverse and fascinating palette of visual media for auction. This year the Arts 4 Bike Paths event has been incorporated into the Earth Day Eco-Fair, which means they've added a lot more hands-on creativity for artists young and old. So, what's happening?

  • Silent Art Auction, featuring works from Randy Sites Baskerville, Betty Brubach, Linda Capacchione, and Susan Scott, among others.
  • Creativity in Action, take a turn at making origami, creating drums and rattles, try your hand at cardboard and wood sculpture, create a "green doll house and furniture." These are among the many possibilities at the A4BP booth, open to both kids and adults. Recycled items and art materials will be provided; however, participants are most welcomed to bring their own recycables as well.
  • "Right Here, Right Now" environmental art workshop taught by James Yates through the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is an all-day cooperative, creative experience that reveals how art can transform the everyday into a magical experience. Participants collaborate in the creation of an art installation using only materials found at the outdoor workshop site--in this case, the woods and field of the Eco-Fair, and the contributions to the collective can include natural and human-made materials. After a series of exercises that increase awareness and appreciation of our surroundings, the participants break up into small groups and create art installations, workiong closely with the instructor who provides guidance and constructive feedback to ensure an engaging, spontaneous experience…right here, right now. Starts at 10 am, meet at the booth.
The proceeds from this program benefit ACCT's community fund for biking & pedestrian trails & paths. For more information about Arts 4 Bike Paths, contact Linda Capacchione at lacapa007@yahoo.com.
