We're proud to have Apex Clean Energy as the presenting sponsor for the 2016 Charlottesville Earth Week Eco Fair! Here's a bit more about this awesome company that's helping protect the planet and make a sustainable, fossil fuel free future a reality!
Founded in 2009 and headquartered in Charlottesville, Apex Clean Energy builds, owns, and operates utility-scale wind and solar power facilities throughout the United States. Apex now has the largest portfolio of potential wind energy projects in the country—including what could be the first utility-scale wind farm in Virginia, Rocky Forge Wind in Botetourt County. If all goes well, Apex will start construction on that project in 2017.
Last year, Apex completed construction of five projects representing 1,042 MW of wind power, more capacity than any other company in the industry. That’s enough electricity to supply the population of a city the size of Boston or San Francisco each year for the life of a typical wind facility (25 years). The total value of these five projects is almost $2 billion.
In two exciting deals announced earlier this year, Apex will be supplying renewable energy to the U.S. Army’s Fort Hood via a hybrid wind/solar project; and to Steelcase, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of office furniture. These agreements highlight the rapid shift to clean power that government and businesses are undertaking thanks to the affordability of renewables, and they follow on other groundbreaking deals that Apex has executed in recent years with companies such as IKEA. “We’re expanding the market by making it easy for corporations to purchase power or invest in clean energy facilities,” said Sandy Reisky, Apex’s CEO. “For corporations or financial groups, we build the facilities and manage long-term operations, so they can come to Apex for a solution that works for them.”
As the industry is expanding, Apex is growing along with it. The company has seen a rapid increase in its workforce in the past few years, hiring so many new people that in 2015 it was named Top Job Creator by the Charlottesville Business Innovation Council. Today Apex has approximately 200 employees here and around the country.
Now is an exciting time to be a part of the renewable energy industry, and Apex is pleased to be playing a role in accelerating the shift to clean energy, especially as part of the Charlottesville community.
